It is your responsibility to dream a happy, beautiful life. Who else can do this for you, your mother? No! Even your mother cannot hand you a happy life on a plate. So please choose happiness for yourself now, this minute. Please do not say to yourself, ‘I will be happy when…’, or ‘I will be happy if….’ Choose happiness now regardless of your circumstances. You may not realise this, but I assure you that whenever you are miserable, you are choosing to block God’s Will for happiness for you. So please, change your mind and make the world your oyster.
The human mind is very adept at fantasising about the future, but far few of us have developed the tools or the self-discipline to master our own destiny. You need to be successful in this world in order to make your dreams come true, including your spiritual dreams. This means that you need to put some time and effort into becoming as skilful as possible in your chosen career or profession. Please don’t just sit there and say, ‘The light will provide. The light will guide me’. The light guides everyone equally, and yet there are so many poor people in the world. What makes you so special that you think you need do nothing to support yourself?
Whilst you still have a body and a physical life, there are always lessons to learn. Some spiritual teachers may say to you, ‘There is no need for you to do anything. You already are that which you are seeking to find’. Others may say that this whole world is just a very temporary dream or illusion, so that there is really no point in pursuing any worldly dreams. But my sincere advice to you is, ‘Don’t be unworldly’.
Do not renounce the world and worldly activities such as your career, or your family responsibilities, whilst this world still feels very real to you, or you will just become depressed and angry. You will feel like you have made a huge sacrifice in order to be ‘spiritual’ ‘pure’ or ‘good’. The modern spiritual path is not a path of sacrifice or renunciation. The idea that we have to be poor, or celibate, in order to be spiritual is so last century. Far better to sit quietly and consult your open heart and calm mind about what you still desire in this world, whether it is a sexual partner, a successful career, or a dream home with a swimming pool. Then go for it! Dream a better dream, so that you are no longer so fearful or depressed.
Some of you may have spent years longing and planning for something good to happen to you and it just has not materialised. For example, you may have longed to be a doctor since you were 5 years old, but however hard you tried you just could not make the grade for medical school. When doors seem to shut in your face like this you may decide that God is not on your side, or even that God does not exist because he never seems to answer your heartfelt prayers.
My advice is, if one door is firmly shut for you, see this as part of the divine plan for you, and simply go through another door. Learn from those who adopt a ‘we can do it’ attitude to life, even when life seems to be going against them. I love the American spirit. Most Americans are obsessed with making money, but I still admire their incredibly positive attitude and drive. If their business fails, as most new businesses do, they pick themselves up and start another one until they finally find a winning formula.
Even if some situation in your life is difficult, please try to see it as still supporting you. A lot of students say to me ‘Jason I hate my work’ or ‘My boss is impossible’, and then they complain that they are so unfulfilled and unhappy. Please don’t hate your work. How can this attitude make your life joyful and abundant? Keep healing yourself until you actually love the work that you used to hate, or the boss who drove you mad, and then move on.
This is a loveless world, but when you are truly loving, kind and skilful, everyone will beat a path to your door. Whatever type of work you are in, why not do your best to make your clients or customers feel good about themselves by extending unconditional friendship to them? Assist them to feel warm with your bright smile and enthusiasm. I tell my students, ‘Don’t just be a tai chi teacher, be a truly inspiring tai chi teacher. Be an absolutely outstanding tai chi teacher, rather than a run of the mill teacher, and you will inevitably become a great success’.
Another practice, if you really want to be rich, is to give as much as you can to those less fortunate than yourself. You do not have to give out more than you can afford, but you do need to support others, if you want to receive support from life. You need to keep planting good seeds to manifest abundance in your life. If you experience a lack of money, give some away with an open heart and watch out for signs that your generosity is rebounding on you.
In the West, we have not been taught the fundamental natural law ‘If you give, you will have more’. The whole of humanity believes in lack, but if you truly understand the divine law, you will know that all that you give to others with an open heart will multiply for you. The moment you stop giving from your heart and start counting your pennies is the moment in which you will experience lack and scarcity. Please don’t block your abundance with your fearful and limited mindset. If you believe that you are poor, there is something wrong with your mind. You are dwelling in fear rather than love. When you are in love, you are so creative and abundant it is almost unbelievable!
Everyone dreams of success and happiness, but 99 people out of 100 say to me ‘Jason it can’t be done’. I always say to myself, and others, ‘It can be done’. So please don’t tell your dreams and grand plans to someone who will pour cold water all over them. Anyone who really commits to being an outstanding success in this world can do it. I do not doubt this about myself, because I am always connected to infinite, unconditional love. I am always affirming my true identity as the perfect manifestation of Life or Love Itself. As I do this, the whole world becomes my playground, and all worldly problems and desires seem less and less real to me. Occasionally, I still forget my true identity, and then my life seems full of problems once again, but these times are getting fewer and fewer.
